Granular Flow Modeling of Galvanized Steel Scrap Injection into the HIsarna Iron‐Making Reactor

Galvanized steel scrap flow and injection into the HIsarna reactor are investigated using discrete element method (DEM). The particle is fed through an inclined chute hits slag surface where zinc content evaporated solid particles melt. A DEM model setup validated experimental data obtained from exact plant‐scale geometry particles. Using model, effect of inclination, elevation, mode (batch continuous), batch size, flowrate on distribution exerted pressure investigated. It found that continuous most suitable to increase spread also reduce surface. Placing dent‐like obstacles at tip significantly increases impact area, especially for batchwise injection, thus reducing force minimizes risk liquid splash. Larger area beneficial obtain higher evaporation rate minimize temperature disturbance.
